Families with school age children living in an East Sutherland village are to get help towards their food bills during school holidays this academic year, it has been announced.

Brora Development Trust is to offer grocery vouchers to families in its area after successfully pulling together a £20,000 funding package.

Trust chairman Tony Gill said: “The trust is committed to providing support to families this academic year as they continue to try to meet the financial demands of the high cost of living.

“School holidays can put additional pressure on households where children and young people do not have access to free school meals.”

This latest initiative comes in the wake of a pilot project in December last year which saw the trust distribute 205 vouchers with a value of £20 each to families in Brora. That project was funded by the Westminster Foundation.

The trust has now secured a total of £20,000 with £10,000 awarded from North Highlands Initiative and £5,000 each from the National Lottery Community Fund, and Highland Council’s Community Regeneration Fund.

Kate Still, chairperson of the National Lottery Community Fund, said: “National Lottery funding can make amazing things happen in local communities across the country.

“This project delivered by Brora Development Trust is a great example of community activity in action, showing just what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause or to help others.

“National Lottery players can be proud to know that the money they raise is helping to support this vital work which is making a real difference to so many.”

Brora Development Trust would like to thank early years providers Brora Nursery and Stepping Stones and Brora Primary School and Golspie High School for all their help and support in making the initiative possible.

Brora Development Trust is a registered Scottish charity whose function is to address social, economic, environmental and cultural issues in Brora and district, and to enable the community to play a bigger role in shaping its own future.
