A Melness woman is preparing to shave her head in an effort to raise funds for new play equipment at her local primary school.

Care at home worker Brogan Rees (29) initially decided to go under the clippers as part of her 30th birthday celebrations.

But the idea has since gathered pace, and she is now using the attention to raise funds towards the purchase of a new climbing frame for Tongue Primary School.

The school is a cause close to her heart, with her own nieces and nephews and many of her friends' children attending as pupils.

She said: "I wanted the money to go to something local. The kids have had it so hard these last few years, so I reached out to one of the school teachers at Tongue Primary and asked what the kids need, or what they would like."

"The school had been raising money to buy a new climbing frame, so I thought I would try to do anything I could to help them reach that goal."

Brogan's head shave is her latest fundraising endeavour, having previously completed a Christmas Eve sea swim at Talmine bay in which she raised £660 for a children's charity.

Brogan decided to chop her hair as part of her plans to celebrate her 30th birthday.

While the head shave might seem like a daunting challenge, the care worker says the feeling is one of excitement rather than fear when it comes to losing her blonde locks.

"It's something I have always wanted to do. My husband Graham and I had some difficult news last year and it's taken a lot of readjustment. I've got to a place now where I'm just going to do all of the things I've ever wanted to. I thought if I am going to shave my hair, what better time than when I turn thirty?

"I'm sure on the day I'll be asking myself what I am doing, but truly, I'm excited. It's just hair, and it'll grow back. I think us women can put so much emphasis on beauty and what should be deemed acceptable by society. I am throwing all caution to the wind and just going to embrace it!

"I have such an incredible support network, especially my husband. He has autism and struggles with change, so we've been speaking for a few months about it to help prepare him.

"He has never said he doesn't want me to do it, and he's fully supported me the whole time. How can you not try new things when you've got that kind of love?"
