An Easter Eco Fun Day held at a north coast forest on Sunday, April 10, has been hailed as a great success.
North Sutherland Community Forestry Trust linked with three other organisations to hold the event at Borgie Forest. Also involved were Bettyhill Library and Service Point, Farr Edge and Socially Growing, Thurso.
Trust administration officer Sarah Kerr said: "We were so impressed with the turnout – some 55 people from Melness to Melvich gathered to enjoy the day, and to have attracted so many families from across North Sutherland was a real bonus. The day was a great success."
The event, which was funded by the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub, kicked off with an egg hunt around the trust's log cabin.
The 28 children in attendance wasted no time in finding the brightly coloured eggs and were soon on a "fact hunt" – specially prepared wooden panels containing facts about the flora and fauna to be found in the forest and nearby river had been placed around the area in order to raise awareness of the importance of nature and the environment amongst the younger generation.
Lunch followed as well as some eco-friendly craft activities and a visit from the Easter bunny.
The children were then encouraged to sit with their teddy bears to hear some nature-related stories read by local teacher Hilary Wilson. Older children chose to explore more of the surrounding forest.
Each child was then given a reusable bag produced from scrap material by the Caithness-based Morsbag group. The bags were filled with a range of items from Socially Growing, including chocolate eggs, an eco-related book, some seeds to plant and a ‘How green are you?’ quiz sheet.
Mrs Kerr said: "There were plenty of ideas going around at, and following the event, for further forest-based community engagement, which is fantastic."
