A Bonar Bridge Primary School pupil has won a national food competition aimed at encouraging children to enjoy healthy eating.

Ashleigh Johnson (7), who is in primary three, was one of six winners from across the UK in the Ultimate Eat Well Lunchbox Challenge run by bakery brand Warburtons.

Ashleigh Johnson won a Warburtons hamper filled with baked goods and 35 goodie bags and a supermarket voucher for her class.

The competition was part of a new educational programme to nurture young people’s skills and confidence with food.

Warburtons invited schools to create balanced lunchbox meals using ingredients from the five good groups while also coming up with a name for the creation.

More than 1000 children took part, with entries marked against creativity and nutritional value.

Ashleigh included a banana, apple, yoghurt and water in her "A Happy Lunchbox".

And her healthy food choices won her a Warburtons hamper filled with baked goods and 35 goodie bags and a supermarket voucher for her class to recreate the winning lunchbox entry.

Her teacher Joyce Kullas said: “All the children loved getting stuck into the competition and we’re thrilled that Ashleigh is one of the six winners.

“She is so delighted with her prize and all the goodies for her classmates as well.”

Warburtons has been a long supporter of food education and through The Warburtons Foundation, developed “Bake the Most of Life,” a free online education platform, to support both primary and secondary schools with curriculum linked classroom resources.
