They are pesky, stinging critters that come out in their multitudes and send most people scurrying back indoors, scratching madly.

But now a ice cream producer is giving people a chance to bite back at one of the north’s biggest bugbears – the Highland midge.

Capaldi’s of Brora has launched a novelty ice cream flavour in honour of the annoying beastie.

Highland Midge ice cream is dotted with midges or black popping candy that explodes in the mouth leaving a satisfying feeling of having bested the bug.

It hit the shelves of Capaldi’s Wee Pink Shop in Golspie on Monday and has been flying out the door since.

Lorna Campbell, who took over the business in 2017 and is helped by family members, said: “It’s a first for Capaldi's and is one of many new flavours now on offer since the business changed hands.

“For years midges have tormented locals and tourists alike and now is the chance to bite back.”

She added: “If Highland Midge ice cream helps to draw people to our shop in Golspie, then we will be delighted.

“Other businesses and the local economy should benefit also. If it encourages people to spend a little longer here, then that’s great.

Capaldi’s, one of the oldest businesses in East Sutherland, celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. Its Wee Pink shop opened a year ago. The firm have recently also introduced a new range of milk shakes.
