It was a mountainous birthday treat that Brora woman Margaret Mackay thoroughly enjoyed.

She celebrated her 88th birthday last Saturday at the top of Ben Bhraggie - 50 years after she had last ascended the 397 metre peak.

Margaret was taken to the top in a 4x4 as part of a Ben Trip organised by Go Golspie Development Trust.

Now in its third year, the Ben Trip is aimed at those who are unable to tackle the steep climb under their own steam.

Fifty people made it to the top in three consecutive conveys last Saturday with seven drivers volunteering their time and transport - one driver travelled all the way from Wick.

Go Golspie’s Tracey Campbell, who coordinated the trip said: “We were especially delighted to help Margaret celebrate her 88th birthday.”

She added: “A special mention must go to Naomi and Donald Macivor for braving the cold at the top and taking photographs throughout.

“We would also like to thank Grace of Dornoch for supplying eats and the Stag’s Head Hotel, who have been a great supporter of this event.”

Go Golspie has a busy month ahead with six drivers due to undergo Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training on Sunday. This will bring the total number of drivers able to drive the community bus to 17.

On Saturday, May 25, the group will be running a fundraising and engagement event in Fountain Road Hall from 11am to 3pm. Local people are invited to attend and share their ideas about development priorities in and around Golspie.

There will be a pop-up fashion shop at the event along with hand massages, hair braiding, nail painting and face painting. Soup and sandwich lunch £5.
