A post box in north-west Sutherland is currently out of service after it was discovered that a nest of starlings has taken up residence inside.

The box, situated in Clashnessie just north of Lochinver, has been home to the birds for several weeks, having been discovered by a postal worker on their round.

It is the second time starlings have made a home in the post box, having also paid Clashnessie residents a visit in 2021.

A notice has been taped to the front of the post box advising that the box is current out of use, with nearby alternatives available in Balcladdich, Stoer and Drumbeg.

A postal worker said: "The nest is now all the way up to the top of the box."

"We have to wait until the birds have left, and then Royal Mail will come to clean the box and it will go back into service once the wee ones have gone."

Starlings are often thought to return to the same place when nesting.
