The wildfire that devastated acres of woodland at Golspie in July 2018, was deliberately started, it has been stated.

Scottish Fire and Rescue service station manager for the Highland north district Jason Gardiner last week confirmed suspicions that the fire was malicious.

The blaze last year came up during a discussion of the recent wildfire at Melvich.

Mr Gardiner told Sutherland County Committee: “”In all probability the Golspie fire was deliberate because there were three seats of fire.”

But he said it was “highly unlikely” the perpetrator would ever be caught.

At its height 50 firefighters battled the blaze on Ben Bhraggie. A helicopter, nine fire units and specialist resources were also deployed.
