Basketball tournament well supported by East Sutherland primary schools with 13 teams taking part

An East Sutherland Schools Sports Association (ESSSA) basketball tournament was held at Golspie High School last Tuesday, November 21.

All eight primary schools in East Sutherland entered teams of P6-7 pupils, with a total of 13 teams - five boys teams; four girls teams; and four mixed teams.

The competition was a round robin format - each team playing every other team - with games lasting five minutes.

Seven sports leaders from Golspie High School served as referees - Niamh Fox, Robyn Booth, Martha Sutherland, Alfie Macleod, Xanthie Mackay and Roxanne Lewis.

They were assisted by PE teacher Sheila Gollan, who made sure the event ran smoothly. On the score table was Active Schools volunteer Gayle Macrae, who helped sort the results.

High Life Highland active schools coordinator Murdoch Jamieson helped to organise the event.

He said: “It was great to see all the schools in the area taking part.

“Many thanks to the school staff, parents, and volunteers who brought their teams to the event. Their encouragement and cheering throughout created such a positive atmosphere.

“The event allowed pupils to make new friends and links between different schools in the area, so there is a huge social benefit as well as encouraging pupils to be physically active.

“Training for these tournaments starts weeks in advance, with practice sessions during school, lunchtime and after school. Huge thanks to school staff and local volunteers for their hard work in preparing the pupils. Well done to everyone!”

Trophies were awarded to the girls and the boys teams that came first in Small Schools and Big Schools categories. There was also a mixed teams award.

Councillor Jim McGillivray, East Sutherland and Edderton, presented the awards to the winning teams.
