Forbes: I fight for women’s rights

In a keynote address ahead of International Women’s Day 2023 on Wednesday (8 March 2023), Kate Forbes has said she fights for women’s rights as a young woman who understands first-hand the deep seated inequalities that still exist.
The Finance Secretary said too many women were still subject to harassment, violence and discrimination and that she will tackle these issues head on as SNP leader “with a personal interest in change and equality”.
The Badenoch MSP made the remarks as she met with Dr Marie Macklin – founder and executive chair of the Halo project in Kilmarnock – as well as a number of other female entrepreneurs and business leaders.
“As a young woman, with a baby girl, I have a vested interest in fighting for women's rights. As we approach International Women’s Day, I want to pledge again my unwavering support in the fight for women's rights.
“The fight for women's rights is best led by women, including a female First Minister, with a personal interest in change and equality.
“Across the world and here in Scotland, too many women and girls are subjected to harassment, violence and discrimination. As First Minister I pledge to tackle the root causes, resourcing the police and other public bodies to end human trafficking, domestic abuse and sexual assault"
As Finance Secretary she had focused on empowering women in the workplace, including female entrepreneurship.
"Today, I met with a number of female entrepreneurs to hear more about how we support women to achieve their potential.
“I want my daughter to grow up in a country free of prejudice, harassment and violence targeted at women and girls and so this is as much a mother's mission as it is a politician's pledge.”
