Assynt Mountain Rescue Team members treated to dazzling display of northern lights during a call-out





A mountain rescue team was called to the aid of an injured hillwalker under the "most amazing display" of the northern lights.

The hiker got into trouble on a path in Sutherland.

Assynt Mountain Rescue Team went to his aid on Sunday night, illuminated by the dazing aurora.

A spokesperson for the team said: "We were called out under the most amazing display of the northern lights.

"Luckily the casualty, who had been struggling with his knees on the descent path from the Inverkirkaig, was able to walk himself back to the waiting Land Rover and the extra hands available at the car park were not required.

"In total 12 team members were involved. He had left a route plan with a friend and was several hours overdue, so this was exactly the right thing to do.

"If you are concerned that you may not be able to make it down the mountain, please do not hesitate to call 999, ask for the police and then ask for mountain rescue. It takes time to get team members to the correct place, so get the ball rolling early if you are in any doubt."
