The coronavirus pandemic has given rise to fears as to whether or not traditional Christmas community celebrations will be able to take place.

Public events across the county including Christmas light switch-ons and parties, have already been cancelled to lessen the risk of Covid-19 spreading.

But Assynt residents and those willing to travel, will be able to get into the spirit of the season with one festive event at least set to take place.

A Christmas fair is to be held outdoors next Saturday, November 28, from 10am to 4pm. It is to go ahead in a particularly scenic location - the Pole Barn and walled garden at Glencanisp Lodge, the headquarters of the Assynt Foundation.

A host of craftspeople are expected to set up stall at the event, selling locally made items.

On offer will be a range of gifts, jewellery, ceramics, yarn and knitwear, cards and charcuterie.

Mulled wine and other refreshments will be served at another building on the estate – the Arts Studio.

Organisers are reminding anyone keen to attend the fair that Covid measures will be in place and face covering must be worn.

A spokesman said: "This has been a difficult year for everyone and Christmas probably will be different too. Local artists hope to spread some festive cheer."
