Sir – I am writing a book about all the men who were born in Scotland and who have won the Victoria Cross.

Robert Macbeath is one such man. Although I now know a great deal about him, I am still curious about his earlier life.

I was led off course searching for Robert by the Register of the Victoria Cross who stated that Robert was born at Kinlochbervie.

I have discovered that Robert was born in Aberdeen to a Williamina Shephard who became estranged from her husband but later had a number of children by different men and registered them in their fathers’ names.

I have learned that Robert was put into care when he was three years old.

A check on the 1911 census shows Robert as having been in Kinlochbervie at aged 13 years living with a Mrs Barbara McKenzie and her brother Robert. It also states that he was an adopted son from Aberdeen.

I was wondering if any of your readers know anything about Barbara McKenzie and when Robert was adoted from Aberdeen.

Robert Tucker,

42 Manrico Drive,

Lincoln,

Lincolnshire, LN1 1AD.
