Andrew Carnegie's time at Skibo Castle in Sutherland is brought to life in new book, Carnegie Heritage

A new book delves into the depths of Andrew Carnegie's past as well as his legacy, including his influence in Sutherland where he spent his later years.
The co-authors of the book – published in August – travelled to Skibo Castle in the county during their 18 months of research and writing, meeting several of the philanthropist's descendants.
Carnegie was famed for his libraries, of which there are more than 3500 around the world, including several in the Highlands, but his real connection to the area comes at Skibo.
The book quotes from the Northern Times when it explains that Carnegie was on a quest for a "summer home". It was, according to a letter published in the paper at the time, a sheep farmer at Eriboll called George Clarke, who alerted him and his friend Hew Morrison to "a mansion for sale on the northern shore of the Dornoch Firth".
Carnegie Heritage, a book described as "a treasure-chest of facts, statistics and surprises," is written by Charles Bradbury and Henry Fotheringham. It covers a vast amount of detail around the family name and relations, but is firmly centred on the life of Andrew Carnegie, whose influence remains in Scotland to this day.
The coffee-table title includes a vast range of old photographs, sketches, historical documents and other images to bring to life the detail contained in the well-researched text, and is aimed at people with an interest in the family history or the life of Andrew Carnegie.
