The 7.15pm Heathrow-Inverness flight was cancelled last night.

British Airways has apologised after more than 100 passengers on a Heathrow-Inverness flight were left stranded in London.

It is believed security issues delayed the scheduled 7.15pm departure yesterday.

However, it has been claimed that when passengers were told that had been rectified and BA and Heathrow cleared the flight for take-off, it was forced to stay grounded because Inverness Airport was closed.

It is understood that following the delay to the flight, it subsequently had to be cancelled due to crew working hours and night-stop limitations at Inverness Airport.

The flight was originally due to arrive in the Highland capital at 8.55pm.

A spokeswoman for BA said: "We've apologised to customers for the delay to their travel plans, we have provided hotel accommodation and rebooked them onto the next available flight to get them to their destination."

Highlands and Islands Airports, which operates Inverness Airport, has been asked for comment.
