A north-west Sutherland community group has cancelled its planned evening of Christmas carol singing tonight, after heeding government advice to stay warm.

Forecast wind gust speeds of up to 27mph and temperatures of -1 degrees put paid to the festive event, which was due to be held in Melvich tonight.

Last year, over fifty members of the community turned out to participate in the annual Christmas carol singing event at the site of the former village hall.

An information poster from Melvich Community SCIO read: "The weather forecast is very cold with winds coming from the north-north-east and possibly some rain. It would be remiss of the board to continue with this event under these conditions when the government advice is to stay warm.

"We are sorry to those who were looking forward to the event."

The group are hopeful that a similar event could be scheduled in January.
