The A9 was closed overnight at Scrabster after a landslide spread across the road leading to the ferry terminal and harbour.

Trunk roads operator Bear Scotland issued a warning to motorists and said its teams were attending to deal with the situation on Wednesday evening.

NorthLink Ferries, which operates the sea route between Scrabster and Stromness, said local contractors were due to start clearing the road at 7am.

Traffic Scotland says the A9 at Scrabster is closed in both directions “due to an obstruction on the carriageway”. Bear Scotland added that its teams would undertake a safety assessment at first light on Thursday.

The next scheduled sailing of the MV Hamnavoe leaves Stromness at 6.30am, with an arrival time at Scrabster of 8am.

It was unclear what implications the landslide would have on the morning ferries, which are also subject to an advanced warning through to Thursday evening due to conditions in the Pentland Firth in the wake of Storm Gerrit.

Passengers should check the NorthLink Ferries website for service updates or call 0800 111 4422 for further information.
