The A9 at Berriedale will be closed for an extra night as resurfacing works on the road have been extended.

Bear Scotland, which maintains the trunk road network on behalf of Transport Scotland, said there would be an additional full road closure from 8pm until 6am on Thursday night into Friday.

The road will be closed at the same time on Wednesday into Thursday.

The route has been closed overnight since Monday as surface improvements are made on 420 metres of carriageway.

Work had been due to be completed by Thursday morning, but a spokeswoman for Bear Scotland said a further overnight closure was necessary.

Traffic will be allowed through the site during "amnesties" at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, midnight, 2am and 4am.

An alternative route is available via Lairg, for those who do not want to wait for an amnesty.

The A9 will be open outwith working hours to keep disruption to a minimum, with a speed restriction of 30mph in place as traffic will be running over a temporary surface.

Access through the works site for emergency services will be maintained at all times.
