The Co-op store in Golspie is to be transformed within the next few months as it undergoes a substantial £700,000 refurbishment.

The Main Street store will embark on its programme of investment on February 23, when it will start to operate a temporary, smaller, store at the site which will enable it to continue to serve the village community with a range of everyday essentials throughout the majority of the works.

The store is expected to close in late March to allow the improvements to be finished, prior to its re-launch at the beginning of April.

The new-look store runs on 100 per cent renewable electricity, and supports around 15 local jobs.

It will include an enhanced in-store bakery, coffee, new tills and refrigeration and a focus on fresh, healthy products, meal ideas, food to go, award winning wines, everyday essentials and, the Co-op’s exclusive new vegan brand, GRO.

The Golspie Co-op like others throughout the country provides a funding boost for local causes through its membership scheme.

Members receive a five per cent reward on purchases of own brand products and services, and the retailer donates a further one per cent to community causes – £17 million was shared amongst more than 4000 community groups UK-wide last November.

In addition, Young Scot cardholders can also pocket a ten per cent discount off their groceries.

Stuart Nicolson, Co-op store manager, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to carry out such significant investment in Golspie.

“The new store will have a great look and range, and I am confident it will enable Co-op to better serve the needs of our local community here in east Sutherland.

“Our aim is to be at the heart of local life, a community hub creating value locally.

“It’s all about providing what our members and customers want, need and care about, conveniently.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding during the works and when we operate our temporary store – and we are really looking forward to welcoming customers old and new back into the store to see the changes and improvements.”

The Co-op picked up the “Convenience Retailer of the Year” and “Food-to-go Retailer of the Year” titles at the latest Retail Industry Awards.

Co-op is owned by around 4.6 million active members, and alongside food, it operates Funeralcare, insurance, health and legal services.
