£100,000 handed out from Sutherland wind farm fund

THIRTY-THREE organisations in the communities of Brora, Golspie, Helmsdale and Rogart have benefited from the second round of awards from the Scottish Hydro Gordonbush Community Fund.

The selection panel awarded more than £100,000 to a wide range of community groups, organisations and charities after considering a large number of applications in this second round of awards since the Fund opened last year.

Carol Elliot, of the Scottish Community Foundation, which administers the fund, said: "The panel received a huge number of applications and had a major task on their hands with some difficult decisions to make.

"It is wonderful to see so many deserving causes benefiting from this latest round of awards. I hope this will encourage others to apply."

Ross Easton, who is responsible for community investment at Scottish Hydro, said: "It’s great to see local groups around our Gordonbush wind farm benefiting from the funding we’ve made available. I’d encourage other community groups who may be looking for funding to get in touch."

The awards are:

Rogart Community Council was awarded a total of £13,500 for three projects.

£5000 – to purchase community play equipment for Corry Meadow Play Park.

£5000 – to cover the cost of running Rogart Gala Day and another event in the year.

£3500 – to cover the cost of running events for the over 60s in the village.

Helmsdale Community Golf Club: £5000 – to part-fund the cost of replacing the group’s century-old golfing greens which are past repair and are affecting the viability of the course.

East Sutherland Community Care Forum: £5000 – to contribute towards the salary costs of a Development Worker.

Fountain Road Hall Development Group: £5000 – towards the costs of installing double-glazed window units and purchasing chairs.

Helmsdale Woodlanders: £4966 to purchase greenwood tools and equipment.

Kinbrace Community Association: £4800 – to carry out works to the village hall.

Pittentrail Recreational Hall Committee: £4755 – to purchase audio visual equipment to enable the setting up of a film club in the village hall.

Royal British Legion Golspie: £4104 – to carry out a major upgrade of kitchen facilities.

Rogart for the Future: £4000 – to cover costs of improving pathways in Rovie Woods and to create new links between tracks.

Bunillidh Squash and Racket Ball Club: £3988 – to cover costs of repairs to the changing facilities and gallery at the squash club.

East Sutherland Athletics Club: £3984 – to purchase running shoes and warm clothing for 50 young athletes.

Golspie Youth Action Project: £3974 –to pay for sessional worker’s salary, an outdoor centre trip, bus travel and kitchen equipment.

Golspie Golf Club: £3850 – to replace damaged windows and the external door to the clubhouse.

League of Friends Lawson Memorial Hospital: £3491.91 – to purchase a pressure relieving mattress.

East Sutherland Wheelers: £3329 – to contribute to the costs of purchasing 11 specialised youth road, track and cyclo cross bikes for young members.

Kinbrace First Responders: £3000 – to upgrade resources and equipment vital to delivering an efficient service.

Brora Community Fete Group: £3000 – to contribute towards the cost of setting up and running a one-day community fete in Brora.

Brora Scout and Guide Hall Group: £2888 – to contribute to purchasing new chairs and tables for the hall.

Loth and Helmsdale Flower Show Society: £2575 – to purchase two square planters, eight recyled imitation spirit barrels, three flower fountains and one precinct flower fountain.

Pony Club, Sutherland branch: £2500 – towards the purchase of a box trailer for jumps and equipment to be stored and transported.

Brighter Brora: £2500 – towards the purchase of new spring plants and bulbs.

Golspie Angling Club: £2460 – towards the purchase of 15ft loch boat and a single axle boat trailer.

Golspie in Bloom: £2243.58 – to replace the polythene cover of a polytunnel and to purchase staging.

East Sutherland Camera Club: £1510 – to purchase a range of digital equipment to extend the scope of club activities.

Helmsdale and District Community Association: £1500 – to purchase additional catering equipment and tables.

Clarsach Society: £1450 to run a workshop in Sutherland followed by a performance and ceilidh.

Friends Brora School: £1261 – towards the cost of purchasing materials and equipment to enable the YES club to complete its electric kit car and take part in a regional race in June.

Gaarfields Day Care, Brora: £897 - to cover costs of redecorating Gaarfields Day Care Centre.

Rogart Primary School PTA: £869 – to purchase a new play house for the nursery.

Strathfleet Buttons and Bows: £850 – to enable the group to purchase one button box and one piano accordion to hire out to people who are interested in learning but want to try before they buy.

Golspie Heritage Society: £741 – to purchase a water heater and oven, including installation costs.
