Royal Dornoch Golf Club set to host Carnegie Shield as players from around the world to compete for trophy
THE countdown is under way to the 111th Carnegie Shield at Royal Dornoch.
One of the most famous trophies in amateur golf will be played over the Championship Course from August 10-16.
Nearly 300 players from home and abroad will be teeing up with their sights set on lifting the ornate trophy gifted to the club by US-based steel magnate Andrew Carnegie more than 100 years ago.
The Shield is the highlight of the Royal Dornoch season, with two round Strokeplay qualifying followed by Matchplay.
Club captain Gary Bethune said: “As ever, we have been inundated with entries for the Shield, with competitors coming from near and far, including the USA, Canada, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, France, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Switzerland and Spain.
“Around 80 names are on the waiting list, should there be any late call-offs.”
Defending champion Chris “Chippie” Mailley - a member at Royal Dornoch and Brora playing off +3.4 - has his sights on claiming the Shield for the eighth time.
His first victory was in 2009 and the golf and grounds manager at The Carnegie Club at Skibo would dearly love to close in on fellow Brora member Jimmy Miller's record 10 Shield wins spanning the years 1965-1983.
