The Met Office has issued a new alert for thunderstorms which could hit the Highlands and Moray today and tomorrow.

Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms could cause disruption this afternoon from around 2pm and throughout the evening, with chances of flooded roads and power cuts.

It states that most areas are expected to remain dry, but that some places “could receive 20-30 mm in less than an hour”, with “very localised totals” in excess of 50 mm possible if storms repeatedly affect the same areas.

The yellow weather warning is expected to last all day throughout Thursday.

The most intense thunderstorms could produce large hail and gusty winds, the Met Office added.

It comes after SSEN moved to Weather Warning Status for the region yesterday, encouraging residents in the area to prepare ahead by saving their emergency power cut number, 105, to their phones and visiting the Preparing for a power cut section on their website.

Last week, Storm Floris caused disruption to the network with more than 70,000 households being cut off across the country.
