Ullapool-based Art Week set to return across Wester Ross
An Ullapool art gallery is preparing for the return of Art Week, with over 150 artists set to be featured in galleries across Wester Ross.
Coinciding with the gallery’s Members Show launch, An Talla Solais’ (ATS) Art Week will run from September 5 to 14, and will include the Artist’s Studio Trail around Ullapool, Rhue, Elphin, Achiltibuie, Gairloch, Garve and even Lochside’s Clachan Church.
As well as this, Art Week will also coincide with An Talla Solais’ Members Show, which will see community groups including the Dolphins Art Project, Ullapool High School, Create Youth Theatre Group and Creative Hands Inclusive Art Group all also show their beautiful art work alongside professional artists at the exhibition.
One of the many pop-up exhibitions will include an exhibition of artists sketchbooks including books Peter White, MK Thomson, Kittie Jones and Eleanor White. ATS artist in residence 2024, Nina Edge, will show her new body of work at Ullapool Museum. Becky Thomson will open her home and welcome visitors to enjoy the paintings of her late mother; renowned artist and Glasgow Girl, Florence Jamieson, who spent her final years in Ullapool.
Events will include a world premiere film screening in collaboration with Reel to Reel of ‘Scoraig Violin’; an animation of how a magical violin finds its way to Palestine, with story, animation, and music being a collaboration of local people. There will also be Botanical Drawing with refreshments at the Ullapool Allotments, as well as artist talks and a walk around Scoraig.
Workshops will include: children’s map making with artist and countryside ranger Jenny Grant, and Mindful creativity and nature workshop with Justine Ritchie and Alison Roe. The week will culminate with a community ceramics workshop, where participants will be invited to create ceramic birds which will then be shown as part of a flock mounted in a prominent location in Ullapool in an assembly of creative flight.
Mhairi Muncaster, director and curator at An Talla Solais said of this year’s events: “We ran our first ever Art Week last year and were amazed by the response. We have some fantastic creative experiences to bring audiences again this year, including a guided walk around Scoraig, a special film screening and lots of open studios and exhibitions throughout Ullapool and beyond.”
