Public asked to help with the Big Pollinator Count
High Life Highland’s countryside rangers are inviting the public to take part in the Highland 2024 Big Pollinator Count.
The count runs from next Wednesday, August 7, to the following Tuesday, August 13, and involves people recording the number of different pollinators, such as bees, butterflies and other insects, to be seen in High Life Highland’s special Meadow Mosaic patches or other wildflower meadows.
Observations can be submitted online.
The public’s contributions will be added to the service’s ‘meadow map’, which helps to track pollinator activity across the region.
High Life Highland’s head ranger Imogen Furlong said: “Pollinators are the most important species on the planet, without them, we have no food! So it is important that we have a good understanding of their populations so that we know where to focus our efforts to conserve and improve their numbers.
“By taking part in our Big Pollinator Count, people can help us gather this really important data and it will allow us to monitor the success of our volunteer -established mini meadows.”
The Highland Wildflower Meadow Mosaic project is run by the countryside rangers and aims to create a series of mini meadows throughout the region.
So far over 90 have been created and there are several in Sutherland.
