Young Dornoch cricketers set pace for Highland junior cricket in match with Northern Counties
A group of aspiring young Dornoch cricketers flew the flag for junior cricket in the Highlands earlier this month when they travelled to Inverness to meet a Northern Counties eleven.
Dornoch Cricket Club Juniors, who along with the Northern Counties are the only junior teams in the Highlands, took part in the eagerly awaited fixture at the Highland Cricket Club's ground on Saturday, August 18.
The head coach of Dornoch Cricket Club, Matt Millward, hopes to see more games played in the future.
"The team has come a long way and it was great to see so many young kids out enjoying the game,” Millward said.
"We hope to see more teams to gather momentum to allow the juniors to have more fixtures in the future."
Junior captain Charlie Millward won the toss and asked Northern Counties to bat first.
The Dornoch CC bowlers showed some fine form after a summer of practice, getting off to a flying start with the bowlers taking wickets at regular intervals.
The pace duo of Robbie ands Charlie Hayes were in the wickets alongside Maisie Levens who took two wickets in her opening over.
Some fine fielding saw the Northern Counties team restricted to 93 from 20 overs.
The Dornoch batters were keen to get into their stride with openers Millward and Mike Bartlett getting off to a solid start.
The following batters of Harry Fleming and Robbie Hayes saw some fine running and lusty blows to get the scoreboard rattling along.
The visitors continued to bat well against some fine home side bowling but the Sutherland side finished on a solid 125 from their 20 overs.
