Manager Bobby Breen says he is proud of Bonar Bridge’s “ugly” side after they ran out comfortable winners against North Caledonian League opponents Fort William on Saturday.

Goals in either half saw the Migdale Park side ease past their opponents, with a penalty kick the only reply to a five-goal onslaught.

With his side now sitting on 10 points for the season - just three short of last season’s overall tally of 13 - the Bonar boss believes his players must now strive for consistency if they are to compete further.

“We have had two 3-0 ugly wins,” he said. “And I say ugly with pride because we did not play as well as we could, but still ground out a win.

“That builds confidence and belief. We also had a very good first half against Golspie and now we have had a good 90 minutes against Fort William.

“So when you put all that together, we now have a team that if they play well can compete with most teams in the League - but what we must now strive for is consistency.”

Bonar Bridge broke the deadlock after the quarter hour mark when a powerful run down the left hand side from Shaun Marshall created the opportunity for Ryan Hamilton to fire past Mateusz Kulbacki with a first time shot.

The home side made it 2-0 just six minutes later when Jordan Shaw showed persistence up front to shoot high into the net.

Fort found their way back into the game five minutes before the interval though, after they were awarded a penalty kick for a handball - David Neil converting from 12 yards.

Within two minutes of the restart though, Bonar had restored their two-goal advantage.

A long through pass from Bruce Urquhart teed up Marshall for a goal of his own and the pacey forward made no mistake with a shot into the far corner.

Any chance of a comeback was quashed on 81 minutes when Marshall grabbed his second, tapping home at the far post after good work from Connel Gresham to break with the ball down the right.

The win was wrapped up with a fifth on 84 minutes after another quick move forward, Gresham slotting past Kulbacki after bearing down on goal from a tight angle.

Bonar Bridge: Maclean, Corbett, C Breen (MacCulloch 30), Traynor, Hamilton, Marshall (Bell 85), Gresham, Shaw, Urquhart (Sands 66), Macleod, R Breen (Monaghan 85). Not used: Smith (GK), Christie, Ali

Fort William: Kulbacki, Atkinson (Clark 46), L Campbell (Vastano 75), Giles, MacRae, Bain, Foggo, F McDonald, Neil, McConnell, Duncan (Stuart 75). Not used: Connelly

Looking ahead to his side’s weekend meeting with league leaders Halkirk United at Migdale, Breen added: “Our next game is against Halkirk, who in my opinion along with Invergordon are the two best teams in the league.

“It will be a huge challenge, so we will need to be at our best and hope they are not for us to get anything from this game.”
