HELMSDALE United moved three points clear at the top of the Sutherland AFA league with a thumping 6-0 victory over Lairg Rovers at Couper Park last Wednesday.

But there was only one goal in it in a competitive first half with Duncan Davidson giving United the lead in the 10 minute with a superb 30-yard drive.

Paul Gordon was on target from the penalty spot in the 60 minute as United doubled their advantage and Gordon struck again five minutes later with a close range effort.

Rovers went down to 10 men shortly afterward and United took full advantage.

Martin Banks raced clean through to goal to make it 4-0 in the 75 minute and Gordon converted another penalty shortly afterwards.

Steven Anderson rounded off the scoring five minutes from the end with a magnificent solo effort.

Last Saturday, Golspie Stafford edged out Dornoch City in a 2-1 win at the Meadows.

A piece of opportunism from Gary MacKenzie resulted in the opener after the Golspie player chased down a slack pass-back to score.

City got one back early in the second half but a penalty award turned the match Stafford’s way after Aaron Smith was fouled in the box. Bobby Gunn coolly slotted the ball into the net from 12 yards.

IN the Highland Amateur Cup, Sutherland AFA teams, Lairg Rovers and Contin ended up on the losing side after their first round ties last Saturday.

Rovers went down 8-2 to a strong Wick Groats side at Ferrycroft despite leading 2-1 after 10 minutes. Andy Murray and Jamie Morrison netted Rovers’ early goals.

In the other tie, Contin were beaten 3-2 by Castletown.

Thomas Logie and Cammy Bell scored for Contin.
