Sutherland clubs have mixed fortunes before North Caledonian League winter break
SUTHERLAND clubs had mixed fortunes going into the winter break in the North Caledonian League last weekend.
Bonar Bridge conceded the lead as they went down to a 5-1 defeat to Halkirk United at Morrison Park.
Shaun Marshall gave Bonar Bridge the lead after 31 minutes, but the Anglers equalised three minutes before half time with a strike from Mark Munro.
The second half started off evenly, but an own goal in the 67th minute put Halkirk United 2-1 up. The hosts then dominated the final 20 minutes with goals from Ali Mackintosh, a second from Munro and Sean Campbell.
The result means Bonar Bridge finish 2024 in ninth place in the 12-team division on 14 points.
Golspie Sutherland continued their title bid with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Golspie Sutherland at King George V Park.
Korbyn Cameron scored twice to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at half time. Cameron Sutherland, Sam Barclay, Joe Anderson and Morgan Kennedy all found the net in the second half to knock Thurso for six.
Golspie are in third place, nine points behind leaders Halkirk United with two games in hand.
Bottom of the table Bunillidh Thistle finished the year with a well deserved point as they held St Duthus to a 2-2 draw at Couper Park.
Saints top scorer Neil Moir twice gave them the advantage, opening the scoring after 27 minutes, before succumbing to an Ethan Bews equaliser just after play restarted for the second half.
Moir's second came midway through the second half, but the hosts fought back to earn a point with 10 minutes left with a strike from Garrick Taylor.
In the other results, second place Invergordon thrashed Fort William 5-0 with goals from Ken Morrison, Kyle Maclean, Ally Macdonald, Ben Bruce and Cameron Mackintosh.
Inverness Athletic defeated Alness United 3-0 in North Kessock with goals from Russell Macintyre, a Richard Boyd own goal and Brodie Watson.
Orkney hammered Clachnacuddin A 5-2 in Kirkwall. John Munro gave the visitors the lead, but goals from Zander Baillie, an Owen Young penalty and Toby Macleod put Orkney 3-1. Struan Coli pulled one back for Clachnacuddin A. However, Kian Vendy and Jason Scott secured the win for the Orcadians.
The North Caledonian League will resume on Saturday, January 4.
