GOLSPIE Sutherland were knocked out of the North Caledonian Cup in a close encounter against Thurso at Sir George’s Park last Saturday.

After a goalless first half, Thurso’s James Murray scored the only goal of the tie when he fired a screamer of a shot into the net via the inside of the upright.

Both sides finished the match with 10 men. Golspie’s John Smith was sent off after he picked up a couple of yellow cards, while Vikings’ goalscorer Murray was shown a straight red card.

In the other ties, doubles from Shaun Robertson and Donald Sutherland helped Alness United to an emphatic 6-2 home win over Clachnacuddin, while Invergordon player-manager Robert MacCormack hit a hat-trick as his side pipped Halkirk United 4-3 at Recreation Park.

In the other tie, David Taylor scored the winner as Muir of Ord Rovers defeated an Orkney select 1-0.

It’s back to league business tomorrow for Golspie Sutherland when they travel north to play Halkirk United at Recreation Park.

Shaun Kerr is expected to be available again as Golspie look to hold on to top spot in the table.

Elsewhere, Alness United host Thurso at Dalmore Park, while Invergrodon have home advantage against Muir of Ord Rovers.

Fixtures – Saturday, 22nd September – North Caledonian League (Sponsored by HRL Scrap) – Alness United v Thurso; Halkirk United v Golspie Sutherland; Invergordon v Muir of Ord Rovers. Kick-offs at 2.30pm.
