PICTURES - Joy for pupils from Golspie, Helmsdale and Lairg at basketball tournament

It was a ‘slam dunk’ for pupils from Golspie, Helmsdale and Lairg primary school pupils at the recent East Sutherland Schools Sports Association P6 and P7 basketball competition.

Eight primary schools took part – with around 100 pupils attending the event at Golspie High School. A total of 14 teams entered with five girls, five boys and four mixed teams with each category playing in a round robin competition.

Sports Leaders from Golspie High School were on hand to help with refereeing and scoring as well as PE staff and other volunteers.

Elissa Stevenson, Active Schools Co-ordinator with High Life Highland, who assisted with the organisation of the event, said: “We are so grateful to all the volunteers, PE and school staff who have been leading sessions allowing the pupils to practice for this tournament.

“It’s great to give the pupils the opportunity to compete for their school in front of family and friends. The tournament always has such a positive buzz and it’s great to see the pupils being active and also socializing with other schools.”

“Active Schools is about getting more children, more active, more often and these tournaments directly support this message.”

Trophies were awarded to the schools coming first in the small schools, big schools and mixed categories, as well as each pupil receiving a medal for first and second place. Highland Council member, Councillor Richard Gale came along to present the trophies.
