MELVICH produced a five star performance as they lifted the Mackay Cup after defeating Mallard 5-1 in the final.

The North coast outfit proved too good for their Dingwall opponents as they cruised to victory at Couper Park in Helmsdale.

James Murray scored Melvich’s first from about 18 yards cutting in from the left on his right foot. Kian Mackay got Melvich’s second when he latched on to a corner kick and he scored at the near post.

Lewis Swan followed up at the back post to tap in Melvich’s third with Mackay finding Melvich’s fourth as he ran on to a James Murray through ball.

Player manager Alan Murray scored a header for Melvich’s fifth of the game. The game was stopped with 15 minutes remaining as one of Mallard’s players was suffering from health issues but has reported to have made a full recovery.

Manager Alan Murray said it was a terrific performance from his team to clinch the trophy and hopes they can use it as a benchmark going into next season.

“It has been a while since we have won a trophy so it was worth celebrating,” he said.

“It was a deserved victory, but we scored more goals than I thought we would. I thought that it would have been a closer game than it turned out to be.

“For the first 20 minutes they had us under the cosh as they won a lot of corners. But when we went 2-1 ahead I thought that we were comfortable.

“Apart from me, we have a very young team, so everyone was hyper after winning the cup.

“This season we have become a more competitive outfit than we were previously.

“We are still not winning enough games, but we have proved this season that we can put up a fight.

“Winning the cup shows that we are moving in the right direction.

“Hopefully we can carry that on to next season and win some more matches, that will be our main goal for next year.”
