Golspie win keeps title chances going

Golspie Sutherland's 3-2 win over Thurso keeps them in contention for the North Caley League title.
Golspie Sutherland's 3-2 win over Thurso keeps them in contention for the North Caley League title.

The victory leaves Golspie six points behind leaders Halkirk United, but with an extra game to play in the run-in.

Mike Sanderson gave Golspie the lead midway through the first half with a clinical finish but Thurso’s big bustling centre forward Lucas Gerazel squared matters just before the break.

Golspie were awarded a penalty on the hour when Sanderson went sprawling in the box and Shane Sutherland coolly converted from the spot.

Sutherland put Golspie further ahead in the 70th minute with a fine individual goal. He cut in from the left, beat two defenders and fired a shot into the far corner of the net.

To their credit, Thurso kept battling away and their persistence was rewarded with a Marc MacGregor goal 10 minutes from the end. The ball appeared to be stuck in the muddy goalmouth before MacGregor bundled it over the goal-line.

Alness United finally broke their duck against rivals Dingwall Thistle at the fourth attempt with a 2-0 victory at Jubilee Park last Saturday.

The match between Halkirk United and Clachnacuddin was postponed.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Golspie host Balintore at King George V Park on league business – kick-off 3pm. Aaron Christie is expected to return in time for this one.

Fixtures, Saturday, 17th March – League (2pm) Alness United v Halkirk United; Golspie Sutherland v Balintore; Clachnacuddin v Dingwall Thistle; Thurso v Muir of Ord Rovers.
