Golspie Stafford are aiming to avoid slip-up which could cost them winning run as they face Lairg Rovers in North West Sutherland League
COACH Ewen Campbell says Golspie Stafford are determined not to repeat what happened last year when they head to Lairg Rovers in the North West Sutherland League on Saturday.
Last season, Golspie Stafford were top of the league with seven wins from seven before losing 6-4 to Lairg Rovers in their first league defeat of the season.
That allowed Tain Thistle to close the gap and eventually go on to take spot and win the league with Stafford finishing six points behind.
This season, Golspie are six points clear of Tain Thistle at the top with seven wins from seven as they prepare to head to Ferrycroft Park on Saturday.
Despite their excellent start to the campaign, Campbell says defeat to Lairg and the downturn in form which resulted afterwards last season, is still fresh in their minds.
He is looking to ensure the team learn from the mistakes of the past.
He said: “Lairg was our slipping point last year. We do need to redeem ourselves against them than we did last season as that is when everything slipped for us.
“We did lose a couple of games on the trot after that so we need to do better than that.
“But we have done not bad in the league so far this season apart from the Highland Amateur Cup. We will take seven wins out of seven so far.”
Golspie Stafford maintained their 100 per cent record in the North West Sutherland League when they were involved in an 11-goal thriller against Inver winning 7-4. Golspie found themselves 3-2 down and pegged back to 4-4 before taking control of the match.
Ryan Dryburgh scored a hat-trick for Golspie with Louis Macpherson finding the net twice and goals also from Cameron Sutherland and Sean McAllister.
Inver, who are the only NWS League side left in the Highland Amateur Cup, got their goals through an Alex Mackenzie double, along with strikes from Jack Traynor and Jack Corbett.
Tain Thistle remain in second place six points behind after they defeated Helmsdale United 4-3. Finn As-Chainey scored twice with Josh Lohse and John Maclellan also finding the net. United scored through a Kevin Cairns double and Euan Macleod strike.
Elsewhere, Lochinver beat Melvich 3-0 with goals from Jake Lockett, Shaun Marshall and James Macleod. Lairg Rovers won 2-0 at Embo with goals from Archie Ryder and Luke Fairns.
