Golspie grab the points
GOLSPIE Sutherland closed the gap on leaders Thurso to three points after a hard fought 1-0 victory over fellow North Caledonian League side Alness United at King George V Park last Saturday.
The match was in the balance until Golspie broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute when Shane Sutherland scored from the penalty spot.
Golspie were on top in the first half and United goalkeeper Steve Martin did well to keep out goalbound efforts from Shaun Kerr and Kyle MacLean.United’s best chance fell to Stuart Murray shortly after the break when his shot looked to be in all the way but Golspie keeper Gordon MacRae somehow got down to make an excellent stop.
Just when it looked as if the match was going to end in stalemate, Kerr was fouled in the box and Golspie were awarded a spot kick. Sutherland, who had come on as a second half substitute, made no mistake from 12 yards.
The matches between Thurso and Muir of Ord Rovers and Invergordon and Clachnacuddin were postponed due to frozen pitches.
TOMORROW (Saturday) Golspie travel to play Invergordon at the Recreation Grounds – kick-off 3pm.
The Sutherland side will be without Scott MacAngus, who has cracked ribs, and Jordan Sutherland, who has work commitments.
