BILLY Ferries’s hole in one was the highlight of the Winter Alliance event at Wick.

The Tain golfer’s ace came at the 151-yard 14th hole, where he used an 8-iron.

Wick Golf Club had stepped in to help when the Thurso course was declared unplayable. The committee at the club prepared all the necessary paperwork and catering and greenkeeper Dougie Thorburn got the course ready.

Thorburn went out first and set the target at 73. But clubmate Gordon Steven came in three shots ahead and they were only split by Ferries.

However the score of the day belonged to Rodney Grant of Reay with a nett 58 playing off 23. Coupled with a decent Sutherland score it means he might already be the one to catch.

The next fixture is at Royal Dornoch on Sunday, November 3 followed by a trip south to Ross-shire on November 17 when the venue is Invergordon.
