Tracey Montgomery wants to recreate that special moment of Sutherland lifting the Highlands and Islands League Cup which they achieved last season.

The striker from Dornoch scored in the 3–2 victory over Clachnacuddin in October, which saw them win their first trophy in their debut season.

Now the 32-year-old, who serves in the army, wants to shoot Sutherland to another cup final when they face Inverness Caledonian Thistle Development in the semi final at Couper Park in Helmsdale on Sunday.

The striker has been on fire scoring 20 goals so far in the 2022 campaign.

Now she is aiming to meet the club’s goal of reaching the cup final and retaining the trophy which means so much to them.

Recalling their cup final triumph over Clachnacuddin at Nairn last season, she said: “We took 90 per cent of the fans, it was a really great day as we had zero expectation to make it to the final, but it was great to win it.

“I actually scored the third goal with a broken ankle, I thought that I had only hurt my knee and we had quite a few injuries in a brutal game.

“But we won the cup and we came third in the Highlands and Islands League, to do that was such an achievement. We felt like that happened thanks to dedication and hard work.

“Now this weekend is our semi final, it is massively exciting for us all.

“It will be a tough game against Caley Thistle, but our determination and desire will get us over the line and we will look to take it one step at a time.”

Montgomery is based with the army at Leuchars and lives in St Andrews, travelling from Fife to play with Sutherland every weekend.

Due to her location, she is unable to go to most training sessions with her teammates during the week.

But she is always focussed on her own individual training to ensure she is in top condition for the team.

“It is three and a half hours to travel from St Andrews, but I am up most weekends.

“I don’t make it to training a lot as I have to work Monday to Friday.

“So I have to concentrate on individual training and how I can improve things.

“I do have to travel far to play, but some of the players are from Ullapool and they come every week too.”

Montgomery has been in ruthless form in front of goal this season, she scored all four goals against Orkney last week and five against Brora Rangers as well as five against Kirkwall City.

She is pleased with her performances this season and pays credit to her teammates for giving her the opportunities to score.

“It has all been down to teamwork from everyone, especially in the last game.

“I have managed to get myself in one-on-one positions with the goalkeeper which has helped a lot.

“But this year we are stronger and more experienced with new coaching staff in and are continuing to grow as a team.

“My aim is to just keep scoring as many goals as I can for the team.”
