Dornoch Primary School has enjoyed a successful couple of weeks on the sporting front.

They have retained the Inverness Primary School Basketball Championship title.

The pupils faced the best youth basketball teams in Highland over four dates during the winter and not only did they come out top in the round robin competition, one of their players, Anya Morrison, was voted the Most Valid Player in the championships.

Dornoch Primary School coach Bridget Morrison said: “It’s been such a wonderful experience for the girls to

be successful at this level of competition.

“They have dedicated time and effort and have played so well as a team that they truly deserve their winning title.”

That was not the only boost for the school’s sports community. Last weekend six of its runners took part in the North District Primary Schools Cross Country Championships at Grant Park in Forres with Anya Morrison again being rewarded for her hard work.

The runners, coached by a couple of parents, put in hard training during term time to be race ready on Saturday for the 2000 metre course.

The girls race was first up, with a victory for East Sutherland Athletics Club athlete Anya. This was followed by an excellent fifth place for her classmate and fellow ESAC athlete Rosie Milligan.

Mikayla Mackay (P6) and Hope Warner-Mackintosh (P7) paced themselves perfectly to claim 10th and 12th places, respectively. The combined scores of these four athletes resulted in a brilliant team gold for Dornoch Primary School – the first time they have won this event.

The fifth member of the girls’ team was the youngest, Chloe Matheson (P5) who has a few more years to be able to compete in this event so this was a great experience for her.

In the boys’ race Dornoch was ably represented by Riley Bevan-Whitty (P6) who ran a very gritty race to claim 10th place.

The next race for these Dornoch runners is the East Sutherland primary school competition at Bonar Bridge Golf Club on March 22.
