Bonar Bridge and Bunillidh Thistle both knocked out of North Caledonian Cup - But Golspie Sutherland win in league as they thrash Fort William to close the gap at the top





BONAR Bridge suffered a disappointing exit in the North Caledonian Cup first round as they were hammered 5-1 by Inverness Athletic at Migdale.

The visitors took the lead with a striker from Bradi Hulme and he doubled their advantage three minutes later.

Robbie Breen gave Bonar Bridge hope at half time when he pulled one back for the hosts four minutes before half time.

But Athletic stamped their authority in the second half when Fergus McWilliam made it 3-1 on the hour mark. Dave Macgruer’s own goal made it 4-1 three minutes later before Ewan Neil scored in injury time to make it 5-1.

Bunilldh Thistle also exited the competition as they lost 3-1 to Alness United at Dalmore Park. Euan Henderson gave Alness the lead after four minutes before Cameron Grant doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time. Michael Mackenzie killed the game off with 12 minutes remaining, but Ewan Bews pulled one back for the Helmsdale outfit in injury time.

In the other two first round matches, Halkirk United defeated St Duthus 2-0 at Morrison Park. Goals came from Sean Munro and Kieran MacGregor.

Holders Invergordon ran riot as they thrashed Clachnacuddin A 7-0.

In the North Caledonian League last weekend, third place Golspie Sutherland are now six points behind leaders Halkirk United after they thrashed Fort William 7-0.

David Murray scored the final two goals with other strikes from Graham Macnab, Lewis Harkness, Steven Sutherland, Korbyn Cameron and Sam Barclay.

In the other league match last week, Orkney cruised to a 4-0 win over Thurso in Kirkwall.

A full card of league matches take place on Saturday with the match of the day between Invergordon and Golspie Sutherland at the Recreation Grounds.

Bonar Bridge are away to Alness United at Dalmore Park and Bunillidh Thistle at home to Inverness Athletic at Couper Park.

Halkirk United face Orkney at Morrison Park, St Duthus take on Fort William and Thurso face Clachnacuddin A.
