Brora Legends top the bill

STARS of yesteryear from the Brora Rangers firmament reassembled for one day only to play in an exhibition match celebrating the official opening of club’s all-weather pitch.

To huge applause from onlookers, they trotted proudly out on to Dudgeon Park last Saturday in bright red strips emblazoned with just one simple word - "Legend."

As Head of Youth Development at the club, David Rose played a leading role in the organisation of the event.

He said: "The Legends were all members of the teams which won the Qualifying Cup and the North of Scotland Cup in the 1970s and 1980s.

The team.
The team.

"I rang them all up and asked if they would come back to play and they were delighted."

The Legends came from far and near to take part in the event with one player, Joe Mulholland travelling from Copenhagen where he now lives. Another player came from Cheltenham.

Unfortunately, they lost their match three goals to one against Brora Rangers Youth Initiative’s agile under 17s team.

Said Mr Rose: "The under 17s were lucky. The youngsters just ran the legs off the Legends. They still had the skill but not the legs!"

Standing from left to right: Bobby Duffy (manager), Alistair Hamilton, Gilbert Skinner, Robert Christie, Ray McRitchie, Jim Mackay, John Sutter, Donald Allan, Jimmy Anderson, Leslie Murray, Gordon Robertson, David Jackson, Graham Stewart, Grant Maxwell, Derek Dewar, Fraser Taylor, Billy Macphail and Douglas Norris (Captain of the team that won the Qualifying Cup in 1978/79 and North of Scotland Cup in 1980/81). Front row, l-r: Donald Ross, Derek MacAskill, Gary Farquhar, John (Cha Cha) Innes, Archie White, Stevie Cowie, Joe Mulholland, Peter Gunn and David Jack.
