Matthew Wright insists he is just happy to be delivering on what is demanded of him after taking a joint lead as the Highland League’s top goalscorer.
A highly-impressive hat- trick performance in the 7-1 away beating of Keith at the weekend fired the Brora Rangers striker level in first place with Kieran Shanks of Inverurie Locos on 19 goals.
Wright, on loan from Premiership Ross County until January at least, also claimed a treble against Wick Academy earlier this season and has settled in superbly to life at Dudgeon Park.
Preparing for tomorrow’s visit of Deveronvale, Wright said: “I was delighted to get another hat trick – it was a great feeling.
“That’s me on 19 goals and joint top goalscorer now so, hopefully, I can just keep adding to my tally and helping the team.
“That’s what I’ve come to Brora to do, get out and play regular football up against experienced players – and score goals.
“That’s what Craig Campbell, our manager, at Brora and the coaching staff at Ross County want and expect from me.
“Saturday was a brilliant win against ’Vale, very convincing in the end. We got that early goal and thought we would go on and score more in that first half, but it wasn’t to be. Their keeper pulled off some good stops.
“We knew at half-time if we kept playing that way and creating chances then it would come for us.
“We’re playing some great stuff at the moment. The way we move teams about and create chances is brilliant and we just need to keep producing.”
The 19-year-old from Stornoway is also confident Brora’s current form and momentum means they have a realistic tilt at the title, despite August’s sluggish start.
A crunch match looms at home to Fraserburgh on December 18, with the Broch also having to visit fellow challengers Brechin City early in the new year.
The Cattachs are seven points off the title pace with a game in hand, but Wright has no hesitation in championing their chances.
He stressed: “The mood in the dressing room is brilliant. We’ve been on a great run of form recently and just need to keep momentum going.
“If we keep scoring goals and keep clean sheets in the way we can, we’ve got a good chance. The belief is definitely there.
“We’ve got two games in hand on some teams and we’ve still got to play teams above us as well, so I definitely believe, if we play like we know we can do, we can be up there challenging.
“It’s a very competitive top end of the league, though, and it is going to be a battle every week. We have to make sure we win.”
Brora’s air of invincibility had seemed to have faded a little at the start of the campaign, with poor results contributing to Steven Mackay’s decision to step aside as manager.
The team’s hunger was questioned, but one aspect overlooked was a lack of depth and freshness with very few new signings coming in.
Max Ewan’s arrival from Nairn has been huge, with the creative attacker on fire at the weekend.
Wright added: “I thought Max was superb. He had the beating of the full-back and kept putting good balls into the box for us.
“It took him a few games to break into the team, but he’s showing what he can do with these performances.”
