LAIRG Rovers and Brora Wanderers are both safely through to the last 16 of the Highland Amateur Cup after the two north west Sutherland sides registered excellent second round wins on the road last Saturday.

Rovers were involved in a marathon nine-goal thriller against Inverness side ICM Electrical at Bught Park. The Sutherland side came from 3-1 down to score two more goals in regulation time to force extra time.

Rovers went ahead early in extra-time but were pegged back again before hitting the winner.

Miller MacKay was the Rovers’ goal-hero with a hat-trick, while Joe Sutherland and Louis Webster were also on target.

Mike MacLean scored twice as Brora Wanderers defeated Castletown 3-0 at Back Park. Scott Miller headed home Wanderers’ other goal in an impressive display from the visitors.

The draw was made for the third round in Dingwall on Sunday - both Rovers and Wanderers were awarded home ties.

Rovers will host seven-time winners of the trophy, Pentland United, who defeated holders Wick Groats on penalties, while Wanderers have been handed a home tie against Maryburgh – 3-2 winners at Point. Both ties will be played on Saturday, June 24.

The third round draw is (ties scheduled for June 24): Rendall v NMM Sam’s (June 17); IRN Security v Hill Rovers; Tomatin v Culbokie; Avoch v ANM Ace; Lairg Rovers v Pentland United; Lybster v Kirkwall Thorfinn (June 17); Iochdar Saints v Staxigoe United; Brora Wanderers v Maryburgh.
