GOLSPIE Sutherland manager Sam Mackay says his club’s sensational 2–0 Scottish Cup preliminary round win at Hawick Royal Albert United was a victory for the North Caledonian League as well as the club.

Goals from Liam Bremner and Miller Mackay secured Golspie a famous victory against the East of Scotland League outfit and set up a home tie against Lowland League heavyweights Civil Service Strollers in the first round on Saturday, September 18.

Golspie Sutherland are the only North Caledonian League team eligible to play in the Scottish Cup as they hold full SFA membership.

Mackay feels Golspie could have won the game by a greater margin but was thrilled that they have made it to the next stage of the competition.

“We went into the match confident we could win the game and the way that we did it was pleasing,” he said.

“We didn’t play as well as we could have due to the way they set up, but we were still quite direct.

“We deserved to win but we would have liked to have scored more goals as we created a lot of chances.

“The victory in the Scottish Cup will give the club more exposure and now maybe people will take our league more seriously.”

Edinburgh outfit Civil Service Strollers await in the next round who are third in the Lowland League challenging for the title.

Mackay says they will be a step-up in quality, but his players should have nothing to fear.

“They will not be looking forward to coming up here, especially after we got a result at Hawick.

“I know that they are third in the league but apart from that I don’t know a lot else about them.

"But the Lowland League is a competitive league with a lot of good teams in there. So their league position tells me they are a very good outfit.

“But it is a home tie anyway, which gives us a bit of breathing space before the game.”
