It has been an exceptional start to the cross-country season for young East Sutherland distance runner, Anya Morrison.

Her first major success came in the North District Championships at Gordonstoun where, despite being one of the youngest competitors, she took the individual gold medal in the under-13 girls race.

This victory meant that Anya was selected to lead the north of Scotland under-13 team against the top runners from the east and west of Scotland at Holyrood. This was an extremely competitive race and Anya showed great determination to secure an outstanding individual bronze medal.

Her next challenge was the Scottish National Championships which took place at Callendar Park last Saturday. This event attracted hundreds of young runners from all over Scotland and, once again, Anya judged her pace perfectly to take another individual bronze medal.

John Davies, the East Sutherland coach, was full of praise for Anya’s consistent performances against the top girls in the country.

He said: “Anya has an excellent attitude towards racing and training and, having represented East Sutherland Athletics Club with distinction, she can now focus on preparing for some important schools events. These include the North Primary Schools Championships in March and the Scottish Primary Schools Championships in April when she will be competing for Dornoch Primary School.”
