Young musicians learn from the best in the business

Pupils from Sutherland had the chance to learn from some of the best musicians in Scotland at Highland Council’s 2011 Music Day.

Local youngsters were among a total of 570 primary and secondary pupils from across the North to attend the event, held in seven venues across Inverness last Thursday.

The day, aimed at all abilities, included group playing sessions and workshops for strings, brass, woodwind, bagpipes and pipe band drumming as well as traditional music and percussion.

An impressive line-up of special guest tutors from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the College of Piping were in attendance.

They included saxophonist Richard Ingham; brass educator and conductor Alan Fernie; samba percussionist Roddy Dickson; and traditional musicians Charlie McKerron and Gordon Gunn and members of Scottish Opera Orchestra

The Highland Council’s Music Development Officer Norman Bolton said: "This is the second year we have run a Highland Music Day and adults and students who took part all voted it a great success.

"The young musicians are able to experience what it is like to play en-masse and having the guest tutors working alongside our Highland Instrumental Instructors was a big bonus.

"I would like to thank everyone involved and we look forward to the 2012 event."
