THE creation of a jobs scheme to help young people has been welcomed by Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston.

The fund will subsidise six-month work placements for people on Universal Credit aged between 16 and 24.

Mr Halcro Johnston, the Scottish Conservative Shadow Education Minister, said: “Rishi Sunak is prioritising the prospects of our young people, many of whom, with their families, will be very worried about the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic could have on their chances of securing a job."

Added Mr Halcro Johnston: “The £2 billion ‘kickstart scheme’ announced by the Chancellor Rishi Sunak should make a real difference to their chances in getting into employment.

“This measure, and the others announced by the UK Government, represent a huge investment into getting the economy going again, saving businesses and saving livelihoods."

He claimed £10 billion of support has come to Scotland in the last few months.

And he urged the Scottish and UK Governments to work together to ensure the scheme is used to its maximum benefit for the "economy, our communities and the young people who need it most”.
