Sutherland County Committee chairman Richard Gale says he is “lost for words” over a decision by Highland Council to remove the pay meters on the public toilets at Golspie some three years after they were installed.

A 50p payment was required to enter the gents' toilets at Golspie but the pay meter is to be removed because of constant vandalism.

Cllr Gale, who represents the East Sutherland and Edderton ward, told a meeting of Golspie Community Council earlier this month that the move was being made because of persistent vandalism, particularly on the gent's side.

“Vandals stick things down the slot and it is costing more to get it repaired than the toilets are taking in,” he said.

“We are back to where we were three years ago. The toilets will be open and free. I am lost for words. We are basically letting the vandals win by virtue of the fact we cannot prevent vandalism. I find it very frustrating.

“However, I suppose as long as they are maintained and kept clean, that is the main thing.”

Community councillor Iain Miller said he had heard there had been further vandalism to the toilets recently, this time to one of the cubicles in the gents.

Meanwhile the vandalism is not confined to Golspie public conveniences. In July Highland Council said it was not providing liquid soap in the gents’ toilets at Dornoch because vandals kept pouring it on the floor.
