Alladale Wilderness Reserve has been shortlisted for two Scottish Green Energy Awards.

The reserve, which is located near Ardgay and owned by environmentalist Paul Lister, is in the running for the carbon reduction award for its aquaponics vegetable garden.

The awards ceremony takes place next month.

And judges have named its micro hydro scheme project as in line for the sustainable development award.

Construction on the aquaponics garden began in June 2019 when a one acre flat area was cleared.

Three greenhouses were erected in October of that year in which are now grown fish, vegetables and herbs.

A spokesman for the reserve said it was producing food with almost no environmental impact, reducing transport mileage and providing for its own needs.

Its 90kw micro hydro generator allows the reserve to overproduce and feed electricity back into the main grid, helping to reduce the need for fossil fuels.

Alladale is up against another two projects for the carbon reduction award and faces competition from four schemes for the sustainable development award.

Award winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on Thursday, November 26, hosted by actress, writer and comedian Jo Caulfield. The event is sponsored by EDF renewables and is free to attend with tickets available now at www.scottishrenewables.com
