‘Weekend full of colour, crafts and friendship’: Dornoch holds 16th annual Fibre Fest

Dornoch’s 16th annual Fibre Fest takes place this weekend across five venues - Dornoch Social Club, West Church Hall, Dornoch Community Hub, Historylinks Museum and Dornoch Free Church, writes Sarah Whealing.

The event kicks off tonight at 7.30pm in Dornoch Free Church with a talk “Sheep to Shawl” by renowned shepherd Jane Bissett.

Jane is the shepherd of the award-winning Kennixton and Cariad flocks from the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.

She will be talking about taking an individual sheep and showcasing the beauty of its fleece in a completely handmade shawl. Definitely one for keepers of sheep, spinners and crafters in wool, entry £5.

Jane will also be the lead speaker at the Shetland Sheep Society meeting at the Social Club on the same day.

There will be workshops over the weekend, with some availability in peg loom weaving, appliqué, and Dorset button making - visit www.fibrefest.org.uk for details.

There will also be the chance to try your hand at spinning and other crafts at the Dornoch Hub, where the Highland Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers will be demonstrating.

Yarn, textile and craft traders will be in the Social Club and West Church Hall. Entry to the market is free.

The well-established Stashbuster table offers an opportunity to recycle unwanted yarn or fabric or to find something special, opening at 9.30am to register items to be sold on your behalf (10 per cent of sales goes to Dornoch and District Community Association (DADCA).

Historylinks Museum has an exhibition of historic costumes with a local connection and beautiful panels from the Spirit of the Highlands and Islands Tapestry project. Admission is reduced if you mention “Fibre Fest” at the door.

It promises to be a fun weekend full of colour, crafts, and friendship and everyone is welcome.
