BRAVE Logan Whittock has had to battle poor health since he was seven weeks old.

Last winter the five-year-old spent nearly every month at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with breathing difficulties.

But next Saturday (July 30) big-hearted Logan from Ardgay will be cycling the longest distance of his life – four miles – to raise funds for the hospital that has helped him so much.

Together with his seven-year-old brother Harvey, he is trying to raise £500 for Archie Highlands.

The money will go towards a new special reclining chair for parents to use in the children’s unit.

For parents and carers staying the night, a little bit of comfort means a lot, especially after a long, stressful day.

Logan – who like his brother attends Gledfield Primary School – will be cycling four miles from Ardgay down the Strath.

For a lad who has had to battle the effects of a respiratory virus since he was a baby it will seem like a marathon.

And the next day Harvey will also be cycling four miles – but up Dounie Hill on the Struie

Parents Vicky and Paul run Ardgay Garage – both are mechanics – and have also built two industrial units in the area.

"Logan has been in hospital a lot over the years due to breathing problems," said Vicky.

"Last winter he was in hospital pretty well every month. This cycle ride is his way and Harvey’s way of saying thank you.

"When he usually gets a cold, he can’t cope with them very well. We are often in Raigmore and have also spent time in hospitals in Golspie and Edinburgh.

"Logan just takes it in his stride. He cycles to school – a mile each way – but this will be his longest ride, health permitting.

"When we heard about the new reclining chairs Archie Highland is fundraising for we thought we could help get more in place a little bit faster – we might even be lucky enough to have one by our bed the next time we are in Raigmore.

"The chairs from the old ward are quite uncomfortable and as I never want to leave Logan alone in hospital by himself I always choose to stay by his side.

"The new reclining chairs would add a little bit more comfort when all around you is mayhem, because it’s sometimes the little things that can help ease the pressure for parents. I know it’s just a chair, but for a parent that gets a little bit of sleep through the night when you’re up every three to four hours helping with medication as your son is more comfortable with you doing it, it helps – it helps a lot. It’s just something small that could make such a big difference for families."
