WATCH: King Charles’ visit to Flow Country went ‘fantastically well’

His Majesty King Charles’s visit to Forsinard Flows went “fantastically well”, the Lord Lieutenant for Sutherland, Major General Patrick Marriott remarked.

The King, making his first visit to the site since becoming a patron for the RSPB, was briefed on the dedication of the bid team in achieving the accolade, before being given a tour of the visitor centre and the chance to meet several scientists and people key to the success of the Flow Country’s successful bid for UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Speaking after the King’s visit, Major General Marriott said: “I think His Majesty really enjoyed the visit. He is very well informed about this subject and was asking some really quite penetrating questions of the many scientists who were here today, and they all enjoyed it.

“You got the equivalent of scientific banter at the highest level, which is quite special.”

Among those who had the opportunity to speak to His Majesty was Kirsty Mackay, a peatland restoration officer for the Flow Country Partnership, who said that the King was “very knowledgeable” on the topic of restoration.

“He was a really interesting person to meet”, Mrs Mackay commented. “He was very knowledgeable about everything that is happening with peatland restoration. He talked about techniques and knew a lot in detail about it.”
